I was delighted last week when my good friend, the Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, gave my campaign his personal endorsment. Alex and I worked closely at Westminster for a number of years, and I have a great deal of respect for him. This is what he had to say:
"Elfyn is a politician who combines passion and commitment together with a thorough knowledge of the parliamentary process which he has always used to the best effect. I've worked closely with him during my time at Westminster and I know that he has always had the best interest of Wales first and foremost in his mind. I am proud to call him a colleague and also a friend."
Given that Plaid Cymru and the SNP are both seeking greater powers for their respective Assembly and Parliament, I believe that this endorsment is a clear signal that we need a strong leadership team which will enable this to become a reality. I am committed to self-governance for Wales and the expansion of the assembly's powers. As President, I believe I will be able to achieve this, and it is one of my main motivations for running for the position.
